Course Description:
Research has shown spirituality and religious beliefs are beneficial to a client’s mental and physical health. However, when trauma has happened from religious leaders, or those using religion or spirituality to shame, individuals can be left with belief systems that can cause mental anguish and harm. As clinicians, if we can identify the underlying trauma we can help clients move to a place of healing and wholeness. Following a brief review of definitions of religious trauma and abuse, we will examine Hassan’s Influence Continuum and trauma informed care. We will engage in a deep dive discussion of composite case scenarios drawn from recent media. We will discuss religious trauma’s effect on a client’s view of self, attachment to others, meaning making, and their relationship with their spirituality/religion. We will examine the systems that reinforce trauma/abuse and complicate recovery.
