Can L.O.V.E bridge frayed relationships between the African American community and police departments, improve public safety, and help people with differing views come together in common unity?
Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award Winning Filmmaker and Howard County resident A.J. Ali explores the ideology of connecting the divide between these two groups through L.O.V.E., an acronym outlining steps (LEARN about people, OPEN your heart to their needs, VOLUNTEER to be part of the solution in their lives, and EMPOWER others to do the same) individuals, law enforcement agencies, and entire communities can take together to reconcile and find common ground, in his groundbreaking 2017 documentary WALKING WHILE BLACK: L.O.V.E. Is The Answer.
Join us for dinner, a screening of the documentary, and a post-screening solutions-oriented discussion with A.J. and other members of the L.O.V.E. Is The Answer team. Come prepared to participate in an enlightening and thought-provoking small group discussion after the film plays as we workshop L.O.V.E.-based ideas for a brighter future for Howard County’s young people.
Hosted at Howard Community College (HCC) by the African American Community Roundtable (AACR) and Howard County Office of Human Rights and Equity (OHRE), we’ll delve into the heart of a nationwide social justice movement birthed right here in Howard County for an unforgettable evening of reflection, inspiration, discussion, and action.
