Howard County Concert Group Changes Name after 50 Years of Service

The Grammy-winning Imani Winds ensemble recently wowed a Mother’s Day audience during the season finale of the Candlelight Concert Society event.

COLUMBIA, MD- The Candlelight Concert Society, a renowned cultural beacon in Columbia, MD, is thrilled to unveil its new name, Chamber Music Maryland (CMM). This rebranding marks a significant milestone in the organization’s history, highlighting its commitment to delivering world-class chamber music throughout Maryland. The announcement was made on May 12, 2024, at Howard County Community College, Smith Theatre, during the finale of the 2023-2024 concert season, featuring GRAMMY-winning Imani Winds.

For more than half a century, Candlelight Concert Society has presented world-class chamber music in Columbia, Maryland, becoming a staple of community enrichment in the area. This evolution to Chamber Music Maryland reflects a strategic enhancement of our mission to connect with more communities and enrich lives through music.

“I believe that Chamber Music Maryland’s new identity captures the essence of what we do: bring diverse audiences together through the intimate and profound experience of chamber music and nurture a deeper appreciation for the beauty and power of live performance,” says Irina Kaplan Lande, artistic director of CMM.

With the rebranding to Chamber Music Maryland, the organization is expanding its concert series and educational outreach. This initiative aims to serve music enthusiasts in Baltimore and Howard Counties, Baltimore City, and other communities across Howard County, making world-renowned chamber music performances more accessible to a wider audience.

Bryan Young, President of CMM, emphasizes the expansion and inclusivity, “Part of our mission is to bring the best musicians in the world home to Howard County. Over the last few years, we’ve expanded our footprint at UMBC and added a new series in Baltimore City at the Peale museum. We think Chamber Music Maryland reflects who we are and who we serve.”

“Chamber Music Maryland really represents what we’re doing: music played by small ensembles, from a soloist to a chamber orchestra,” said Irina Kaplan Lande, artistic director. “We do a lot of chamber music of all kinds, from very early Renaissance to Baroque to contemporary crossovers.”

“We are excited about the future and the opportunities this rebranding provides to foster a love of music to even more Marylanders,” Bryan Young, President of CMM. “We look forward to welcoming audiences old and new to celebrate the power of great music as we begin a new Season”
