How Do You Define Success?

According to Arnold H. Glasow, “Success isn’t a result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire.” In my opinion, this is an excellent quote, and one that is exceedingly inspiring.

As a business consultant, I find it very interesting that many people see success much like winning the lottery. In fact, their perspective on success is so irrational that they see themselves winning this “lottery” without even buying a ticket. They are simply passively waiting for success to happen. You will never hear them voicing this opinion of success but if you look around and watch what people are actually doing (or rather not doing), you will quickly see what I mean.

We all want things–we want to be rich, we want to be at the top of our profession, we want a successful marriage, we want to raise great kids, we want to be respected in our community, and so on. But what do we do to achieve this success? Are we working both hard and smart toward our financial goals and living frugally while we do so? Are we constantly learning and striving at our job? Are we showing our spouse love, consideration, understanding, and generosity? Are we spending time with our children both modeling how to be a good person and being generous with our love and understanding? Are we regularly proving ourselves an asset within our community by being a good neighbor in every sense of the word?

How do you see success? Is it like winning the lottery? Is your perspective on success so irrational that you see yourself succeeding (i.e. winning the success lottery) without even buying a ticket. Are you simply passively waiting for success to happen.

  • What makes one person successful while another can make only modest gains? Often we see only the successful person’s innate talents as the answer. We often think that if someone is not blessed with talent, there is no amount of hard work that can make a difference. However, studies have shown that this is not correct; there is more to success than talent. In fact, the reason for most success is often good old-fashioned hard work. (Alan C. Elliot, A Daily Dose of the American Dream: Stories of Succes, Triumph and Inspiration [Nashville, TN: Rutledge Hill, 1998]).

For me, success is hard work (as simply illustrated below):

  • A young man was walking down the streets of New York when he stopped a lady and asked, “How do I get to Carnegie Hall?” The woman answered, “Practice, practice, practice.” —Anonymous (Alan C. Elliot, A Daily Dose of the American Dream: Stories of Succes, Triumph and Inspiration [Nashville, TN: Rutledge Hill, 1998]).
