Columbia, MD (October 2024)

In this contemplative exhibit, award-winning artist/educator/author Renee Sandell invites viewers to explore a maze-like journey into an imaginative topography from which to discover insights for inspiration, healing, lessons learned, and hope for humankind and the planet. Sandell’s artwork attends to the negativity and uncertainty from harrowing events such as September 11, the Covid Pandemic, and January 6, transforming her art into Virtue Maps that represent significant themes of positivity inspired by her ongoing study of Virtues from The Virtue Project.

The main lobby gallery will display over two dozen Virtue Maps with a set of Virtue Reflection cards available for introspection located by the sitting area. In a nearby interactive display, visitors will be invited to “Leave Your Mark.” The second gallery will exhibit a variety of Marking & Mapping® installations that use silk, paper, and board.

Over three decades as an artist and teacher, Renee Sandell, PhD has used her Marking & Mapping® methodology to stimulate “accessible” drawing engagement for all levels. Her Marking & Mapping® on silk, paper, board, and other surfaces uses a wide range of mixed media such as ink pens, paint markers, watercolor, metallics, Inktense pencils, and brush pens.  These materials create unique linear patterns while adding texture, movement, and luminosity to her artwork, whereby viewers can explore and discover their own meanings. Don’t miss this introspective and engaging exhibit, available for viewing from October 9-December 16.
