Application deadline is Friday, April 4th
ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County Executive Calvin Ball is seeking dedicated applicants interesting in serving on the Animal Matters Hearing Board, including a licensed veterinarian living in Howard County. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 4th.
“Our beloved pets and animals should be treated with care and respect. They only have us to provide for their basic needs, not to mention offering them love and enrichment,” said Ball. “The Animal Matters Hearing Board helps remedy the unfortunate cases where animals may be neglected or suffering. We are hoping for residents to step up and provide a voice for those animals who cannot protect themselves.”
The Board is comprised of seven voting members, with at least one licensed veterinarian practicing in Howard County, three members with animal matters experience, and three members representing the general public, with no more than two members on the Board from the same County Council district. Board members serve three year terms and are responsible for ruling on appeals for animal control law violations and issuing orders and declarations related to the enforcement of animal control laws. Members also make recommendations to the County’s animal control facility and review the facility’s proposed budget.
To be eligible for consideration, candidates must be Howard County residents, 18 years of age or older, have an interest in animal matters and be able to attend the Board’s meetings scheduled as needed on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the George Howard Building, located at 3430 Court House Drive in Ellicott City.
The names of eligible applicants will be submitted to the County Executive for consideration. If approved, the appointment will be forwarded to the County Council for confirmation.
As part of the Howard County Police Department, the Howard County Animal Control and Adoption Center investigates animal cruelty cases, rescues endangered animals, accepts unwanted pets from Howard County residents, administers a pet adoption program, conducts humane education programs and operates the county’s animal shelter.
