COLUMBIA, MD – The Howard Community College (HCC) Board of Trustees last week announced an expanded partnership with CampusWorks to manage and staff the institution’s human resources functions. The agreement will deploy CampusWorks personnel on campus in full-time roles to ensure compliance with changing federal and state HR laws and regulations, improve responsiveness to employee needs, affirm accurate and timely processing for payroll, increase efficiency in employee hiring and onboarding, and increase training and professional development for employees.
“Howard Community College has a rich history of service to our students, employees and our surrounding communities and region. Part of what makes our service notable among large-sized organizations across several industries is our ability to adapt to change,” said HCC Interim Board Chair Vivian Moore Lawyer, Esq. “This change affirms HCC’s commitment to cultivating a culture where trust, respect, and the ability for employees to reach their full potential is paramount. We are confident that our new standards for HR performance and reliability will be immediately helpful across the campus enterprise.”
HCC has worked intermittently with CampusWorks since 2014 to upgrade technology, finance, and HR services and systems, resulting in notable improvements and constructive outcomes. In the course of this partnership, senior leaders have discovered a number of opportunities to close gaps in efficiency and compliance standards within the division, which officials say have grown over a ten-year period.
“Many of our stakeholders have described the need for transformative change in HR services for more than a decade,” said HCC President Daria J. Willis. “Meeting the needs and expectations of our faculty and staff is a direct and critical component of meeting our students where they dream, and federal and state regulatory requirements as they change. This pivot ensures that we positively grow as one of Howard County’s largest employers and a socioeconomic anchor institution for central Maryland.”
“To effectively serve students at Howard Community College, the college must first serve its employees,” said Liz Murphy, CEO of CampusWorks. “CampusWorks is privileged to be working with the College to expand the services available through human resources. Growing regulatory demands and increased competition for talent have created gaps in colleges’ abilities to provide modern, responsive HR services to their employees. CampusWorks’ deep expertise and experience in higher education allow us to partner with HCC to ensure a satisfying employee experience.”
CampusWorks has been recognized five years in a row as a Great Place to Work and as a Top 50 Best Workplaces in Consulting and Professional Services.
Howard Community College was recently named among the nation’s top two-year colleges by Niche, an online college selection and data resource for families. HCC enrolls nearly 22,000 credit and non-credit students of all ages from more than 104 countries and yields more than $343 million in economic impact as one of Howard County’s largest employers.
