COLUMBIA, Md. — Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center received a $3 million grant from The Kahlert Foundation to support hospital renovations creating a 29-bed observation unit. Further, the foundation will match additional donations to the project up to $600,000. The Kahlert Foundation is a private Maryland-based family foundation and longtime donor.

“Investing in your local hospital means supporting the health and well-being of your community and even your loved ones. At any given time, someone in your family or circle of friends will need our services,” said Dr. Shafeeq Ahmed, president of Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center. “The Kahlert Foundation has been a wonderful supporter of the hospital in the past, and we are thankful for this support, as it allows us to have a greater impact in the community.”

The new observation unit will allow the hospital to provide state-of-the-art care, treat patients more quickly and effectively, improve patient outcomes and reduce emergency room wait times. The renovation will cost over $30 million. Howard County has provided $5 million with an additional $10 million budgeted over the next two years.

“I hope to inspire others to join me in support of the hospital because it ensures everyone in the community has access to essential, quality care close to home,” said Greg Kahlert, president of The Kahlert Foundation. “It’s an investment in the health and future of our neighbors and families.”

The Kahlert Foundation provides grants to nonprofit organizations in the Mid-Atlantic region and Utah to improve the quality of life and well-being of the community in the areas of health care, youth programs, education, veteran organizations and human services.

Supporters can make donations, which The Kahlert Foundation will match, by visiting the Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center’s website.
