HOWARD COUNTY, MD, March 21, 2025— Indivisible Howard County  Maryland (IndivisibleHoCoMD), a citizen-led organization with 1,000 members in  and around Howard County, MD, issues this statement calling upon Senator Chuck  Schumer to resign his role as Minority Leader of the Senate.

Minority Leader Schumer, as chair of the Democratic Caucus in the Senate, broke  with the vast majority of his caucus to allow a GOP funding bill to advance, without  any restrictions on the ongoing efforts from Donald Trump and Elon Musk to  dismantle the federal government.

Under Senator Chuck Schumer’s Leadership, Senate Democrats just surrendered a  rare moment of leverage to rein in the chaos and harm of the actions of Donald  Trump, Elon Musk, and Congressional Republicans. By voting to advance the GOP  government funding bill, rather than demanding anything in return, Schumer handed  more power to the extremist agenda the Republicans have waged against the  government. This was not just a strategic mistake – it was a demonstration that  Schumer is not prepared to lead the Democratic opposition and protect our democracy.  We thank him for his years of service and call on him to step aside as minority leader.

In the week leading up to the budget vote, members of IndivisibleHoCoMD called  upon our own Representative Elfreth and Senators Van Hollen and Alsobrooks to vote  NO to the Trump/Musk budget and we are proud of and grateful for their courage in  standing up and voting NO to protect our country. We will continue to support their  leadership and to use all peaceful and democratic means in our power to stop the  dismantling of our democracy, our freedom, and our future by the Trump  administration and DOGE under Elon Musk.

We do not come to this decision lightly – for the country, or for our democracy. But the  stakes are high, and we need leaders who are willing to fight as hard as non-elected  citizens are willing to fight. Schumer should step aside as Minority Leader so another  Democrat who is willing to lead the opposition can step up to take his place.
