ELLICOTT CITY, MD – The Howard County Commission for Women is seeking students to participate in its essay and poster contests commemorating National Women’s History Month and this year’s national theme: “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating and Inspiring Generations.” The deadline for entries is 5 p.m., Friday, February 21st.
“During the month of March, we honor the amazing accomplishments of the strong, determined and magnificent women, past and present, who have made a tremendous and powerful difference in our great nation,” said Howard County Executive Calvin Ball. “I look forward to reading and seeing all the great entries submitted by our students that embrace this year’s theme and celebrate the collective strength and influence of women who have dedicated their lives to education, mentorship and leadership.”
For the essay contest, Howard County middle and high school students – public, private and homeschooled, must discuss a female educator, mentor or leader who has inspired them and why. Essays must be typed, submitted in Word or .pdf format, 300 to 500 words long, double-spaced, 12-point font. Students with disabilities may submit their entry using media and/or other modes of audio-visual presentation.
Open to Howard County elementary, middle and high school students, for the poster contest, students must create an original piece of artwork (sketch, etching, drawing or painting) using a medium of their choosing that shows a female educator, mentor or leader who has inspired them and why.
Along with the Submission Terms and Agreement Form, students should submit their completed essay or high-resolution .pdf or .jpeg image of their post to women@howardcountymd.gov with “Essay Contest” or “Poster Contest” in the email subject line. First and second place prizes will be awarded at each educational level to the essay and poster contest winners.
The winners will be honored at the Commission’s annual Women’s History Month Brunch on Saturday, March 15th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the East Columbia 50+ Center.
